Born in 1943, John Tranter is the "leading Australian poet of his generation." He has published ten volumes of poetry, including aSelected Poems (Hale & Iremonger, Sydney, 1982). His most recent books areThe Floor of Heaven (1992), andAt The Florida (1993). His work appears in theNorton Anthology of Modern Poetry (New York, second edition, 1988). He compiled and edited (with Philip Mead) the 1992Penguin Book of Modern Australian Poetry. Earlier anthologies include the controversial The New Australian Poetry (1979). Tranter has published widely at home and abroad in the Paris Review, Kenyon Review, Grand Street, New American Writing, Conjunctions, Boulevard, and Post-Modern Culture (on the Internet). He now lives in Sydney.
