Harryette Mullen has written three books of poetry, Trimmings, S*PeRM**K*T, and Muse & Drudge. Nina Wiener wrote in Buzz Weekly, "The exceptional quality of her jazz-inspired poems leads us to imagine her the literary offspring of Gertrude Stein and Langston Hughes--a delightfully lethal combination." There are few other poets in the USA with Mullen's craft and verve, and out of all of these, she's the smartest and nicest. Mullen is an associate professor of literature at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has published and lectured extensively on African American writing, on topics ranging from slave narratives to folk traditions to the avant garde. She is the author of Freeing the Soul: Literacy and Liberty in Slave Narratives, and the recipient of numerous fellowships, including a Rockefeller Fellowship from the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women's Studies at the University of Rochester.
